Swedish ship under Finnish command when Sweden and Finland practice joint naval warfare

The Swedish and Finnish navies have conducted a series of rapidly emerged exercise activities in recent weeks. Within the framework of this exercise, the navy has received and led Finnish amphibious units and contributed to a simulated joint naval combat under Finnish leadership.

At 14:15 on Wednesday Swedish time, an exercise was simulated where eight anti-ship missiles hit their common target in the northern Baltic Sea. Minutes before, they were fired from Swedish and Finnish units in order to practice together the engagement of a common target at sea.

– Under Finnish leadership, we conduct qualified anti-ship warfare, where we, among other things, use our heaviest weapon, the RBS15 anti-ship missile. Being able to carry out this type of complex exercise where two navies and two air forces coordinate the engagement of an adversary in time and space is an impressive achievement by all participants, says Lieutenant Commander Daniel Eklund, commanding officer of HMS Sundsvall.

The joint anti-ship warfare in the northern Baltic Sea was the conclusion of the readiness exercise that has been conducted together with Finland in recent weeks. Command of the Swedish corvette HMS Sundsvall is handed over from the Swedish to the Finnish navy, target data is collected and shared between ships and aircraft. Anti-ship missiles are loaded onto the aircraft and preparations for missile shots are carried out on board the ships.
