The challenge aims to engage students in solving real-world problems within maritime security. Now, four teams move forward with financial support to bring their ideas to life.  <\/strong><\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>About the Challenge<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p>The MTC Student Challenge is conducted in collaboration with FMV Test and Evaluation and BTH \u2013 Blekinge Institute of Technology, with the aim of connecting future engineers with current technical challenges in the defense sector.<\/p>\n\n<p>The Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) defined four specific problem areas:<\/p>\n\n<p>\u2022 Detecting and managing hostile drones<\/p>\n\n<p>\u2022 Navigation without GNSS<\/p>\n\n<p>\u2022 Protecting underwater infrastructure<\/p>\n\n<p>\u2022 The oil is gone<\/p>\n\n<p>Ten student teams, with a total of 15 ideas, were accepted into the challenge and had the opportunity to present their concepts to a jury consisting of experts from MTC, FMV, and BTH.<\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Recipients of Development Grants<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<p><strong>SEK 75,000 \u2013 Primary Grant Recipients (presented at Marine Innovation Day)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p>Simon Lindqvist, Tobias Gustafsson, Viktor Fransson and Alexander Alfaro<\/p>\n\n<p>Challenge: Managing hostile drones<\/p>\n\n<p>An autonomous drone that can independently locate and intercept hostile vehicles using a camera and AI.<\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<p>Emil Knutsson, Saif Kadahin and Nemo Bemo<\/p>\n\n<p>Challenge: Managing hostile drones<\/p>\n\n<p>A scalable sensor system based on automotive radar technology \u2013 a potential mass-deployable solution to protect critical infrastructure from drones.<\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<p><strong>SEK 50,000 \u2013 Grants for Further Development<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p>Birk Brunell<\/p>\n\n<p>Challenge: Managing hostile drones<\/p>\n\n<p>Smartphones are transformed into drone sensors within an AI-powered network \u2013 enabling fast and cost-effective detection in the field.<\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<p>Petter Eriksson, Amin Afzali and Philip Wolls\u00e9n Ervius<\/p>\n\n<p>Challenge: Navigation without GNSS<\/p>\n\n<p>The solution is based on an AI-powered inertial navigation system (INS) that is trained using GNSS data under normal conditions but can calculate and update a vessel\u2019s position using onboard sensors in the event of GNSS disruption. A robust and adaptive method for navigation in contested environments. <\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<p><strong>Next step: From idea to prototype<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p>The grants give the teams the opportunity to further develop their solutions until September 2025. At that time, they will present their prototypes to representatives from the defense industry, FMV, and other stakeholders.
